Supporting Survivors: Bringing Light and Hope During the Holidays

Discover how you can support domestic violence and sexual assault survivors and their children during this holiday season and bring light and hope into their lives.

Understanding the impact of domestic violence during the holidays

The holiday season is often portrayed as a time of joy, love, and togetherness. However, for survivors of domestic violence, this time of year can be particularly challenging. Domestic violence can intensify during the holidays due to various factors such as financial stress, increased family gatherings, and heightened emotions. Memories of past abuse or the absence of a supportive and loving family can make this time even more difficult.

Creating safe spaces for survivors of domestic violence to heal and celebrate during the holidays is essential. Here at Fort Bend Women's Center, we provide a safe environment where survivors can access resources, counseling, and support groups for adults and children. We also strive to educate the public about the signs of domestic abuse and where to go for help.

How you can help through our annual Holiday Giving Campaign

Children who have witnessed or experienced domestic violence may also feel the impact during the holidays. They may have memories of previous years where the holidays were filled with fear and tension. One way our donors have brought light and hope to the holidays is through our Santa Store which has provided an opportunity for survivors to get toys, books and games for their children as well as gifts for themselves.  With the help of generous donors, we bring joy and happiness into the lives of over 500 clients each holiday season. Clients sign up for a time to come and "shop" at Santa Store where they are able to choose gifts for each of their children and for themselves. It's one of the many ways we work to bring normalcy back into their lives.

Last year, Fort Bend Women's Center served 2,001 survivors and their children, answered 11,221 Crisis Hotline Calls, and provided 9,382 hours of Mental Health Services. Generous donors make it possible for us to provide emergency shelter, basic needs, and many life-changing programs such as counseling, child mentoring, housing assistance, case management, and legal assistance to help survivors achieve independence and a brighter future.

Promoting awareness and education to prevent future violence

While supporting domestic violence survivors during the holidays is crucial, it is equally important to work towards preventing future violence. Promoting awareness and education about domestic violence can help break the cycle and create a safer future for everyone. By educating ourselves and others about the signs of domestic violence, we can intervene early and provide support to those who may be at risk.

Additionally, advocating for policies and programs that address domestic violence, supporting organizations that provide resources and services to survivors, and engaging in conversations about healthy relationships and consent are all ways we can contribute to preventing future violence. Together, we can build a society where everyone can celebrate the holidays in a safe and loving environment.
