When children of domestic violence and sexual assault come to us, they are often scared, confused and uncertain about their life and what’s next. It wasn’t just their parent experiencing the life-altering abuse. Whether they were just a bystander or a direct recipient of the acts of violence, they have been affected by it. Studies have shown that many children who have been exposed to adult domestic violence show aggressive, antisocial, and fearful behaviors, exhibiting lower social competence and poorer academic performance.
Not only do we offer a safe environment and of course the basic essentials, but this is where our Program’s Child Mentor support comes in. From counseling and educational support to self-esteem building and enrichment activities, we try our best to reassure them that the world is not all bad and encourage them to have the confidence to trust again. Another piece of child mentoring is educational fun! And our Child Mentoring team is busy providing a full schedule of amazing field trips and enrichment activities this summer. Let’s face it…nothing makes us more fulfilled than seeing the smiles on those cute little faces!
Thanks to our Children’s Programs, here’s what the children have been up to this summer!
Their days are filled with field trips to the Zoo and Bayou Wildlife Park to learn about various animal species and conservation, splash time, art days to practice expression, personal pizza-making day, and a trip to the trampoline park to encourage fun and physical activity. They even attended the Main Street Theater to watch “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown,” opening their world up to educational arts and tried their hand at cooking.
As you know, after all of the fun comes a brand new school year, sometimes even a brand new school for many of the children at our Emergency Shelter. As you can imagine, that brings a whole new set of nerves and stress for the children. But luckily, that’s where you come in! And we need your help to continue to provide the programs to reshape the world around children of survivors and prepare them for a brand new school year.
Will you Measure Up 4 Kids this year? You can be a huge piece of providing everything they need for a successful school year!
Thank you for bringing healing and hope to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. We can’t do it without you!
